The First Destruction of Al-Baqi 

The Wahhabis believed that visiting the graves and the shrines of the Prophets, the Imams, or the saints was a form of idolatry and totally un-Islamic. Those who did not conform with their belief were killed and their property was confiscated. Since their first invasion of Iraq, and till nowadays, in fact, the Wahhabis, as well as other rulers of the Gulf States, having been carrying out massacres from which no Muslim who disagreed with them was spared. Obviously, the rest of the Islamic World viewed those graves with deep reverence. Had it not been so, the two caliphs Abu Bakr and Umar would not have expressed their desire for burial near the grave of the Prophet (s).

 

From 1205 AH to 1217 AH, the Wahhabis made several attempts to gain a foothold in Hijaz but failed. Finally, in 1217 AH, they somehow emerged victorious in Taif where they spilled the innocent blood of Muslims. In 1218 AH, they entered Makkah and destroyed all sacred places and domes there, including the one which served as a canopy over the well of Zamzam.

 

In 1221, the Wahhabis entered Madina to desecrate al-Baqi as well as every mosque they came across. An attempt was even made to demolish the Prophet's tomb, but for one reason or another, the idea was abandoned. In subsequent years, Muslims from Iraq, Syria, and Egypt were refused entry into Makkah for Hajj. King Al-Saud set a pre-condition that those who wished to perform the pilgrimage would have to accept Wahhabism or else be branded as non-Muslims, becoming ineligible for entry into the Haram.

 

Al-Baqi was razed to the ground, with no sign of any grave or tomb whatsoever. But the Saudis were still not quite satisfied with doing all 
of that. Their king ordered three black attendants at the Prophet's shrine to show him where the treasure of valuable gifts were stored. The Wahhabis plundered the treasure for their own use.

 

Thousands of Muslims fled Makkah and Madina in a bid to save their lives and escape from the mounting pressure and persecution at the hands of the Wahhabis. Muslims from all over the world denounced this Saudi savagery and exhorted the Caliphate of the Ottoman Empire to save the sacred shrines from total destruction. Then, as it is known, Muhammad Ali Basha attacked Hijaz and, with the support of local tribes, managed to restore law and order in Madina and Makkah, dislodging the Al-Saud clansmen. The entire Muslim world celebrated this victory with great fanfare and rejoicing. In Cairo, the celebrations continued for five days. No doubt, the joy was due to the fact that pilgrims were once more allowed freely to go for Hajj, and the sacred shrines were once again restored.

 

In 1818 AD, the Ottaman Caliph Abdul Majid and his successors, Caliphs Abdul Hamid and Mohammed, carried out the reconstruction of all sacred places, restoring the Islamic heritage at all important sites. In 1848 and 1860 AD, further renovations were made at the expense of nearly seven hundred thousand pounds, most of which came from the donations collected at the Prophet's tomb.

 

The second plunder by the Wahhabis

The Ottoman Empire had added to the splendor of Madina and Makkah by building religious structures of great beauty and architectural value.

Richard Burton, who visited the holy shrines in 1853 AD disguised as an Afghan Muslim and adopting the Muslim name Abdullah, speaks of Madina boasting 55 mosques and holy shrines. Another English adventurer who visited Madina in 1877-1878 AD describes it as a small beautiful city resembling Istanbul. He writes about its white walls, golden slender minarets and green fields.

1924 AD Wahhabis entered Hijaz for a second time and carried out another merciless plunder and massacre. People in streets were killed. Houses were razed to the ground. Women and children too were not spared.

Awn bin Hashim (Shairf of Makkah) writes: "Before me, a valley appeared to have been paved with corpses, dried blood staining everywhere all around. There was hardly a tree which didn't have one or two dead bodies near its roots."

1925 Madina surrendered to the Wahhabi onslaught. All Islamic heritage were destroyed. The only shrine that remained intact was that of the Holy Prophet (s).

Ibn Jabhan says: "We know that the tomb standing on the Prophet's grave is against our principles, and to have his grave in a mosque is an abominable sin."

Tombs of Hamza and other martyrs were demolished at Uhud. The Prophet's mosque was bombarded. On protest by Muslims, assurances were given by Ibn Saud that it will be restored but the promise was never fulfilled. A promise was given that Hijaz will have an Islamic multinational government. This was also abandoned.

1925 AD Jannat al-Mu'alla, the sacred cemetery at Makkah was destroyed alongwith the house where the Holy Prophet (s) was born. Since then, this day is a day of mourning for all Muslims.

Is it not strange that the Wahhabis find it offensive to have the tombs, shrines and other places of importance preserved, while the remains of their Saudi kings are being guarded at the expense of millions of dollars?

"They desire to put out the light of Allah with their mouths, and Allah will not consent save to perfect His light, though the unbelievers are averse" (Holy Qur'an – 9:32- Repentance)

On 8 Shawwal, 1344 A.H. (April 21, 1925), the evil hands of Wahabis, with the help of Abdul Aziz Aal S'aud who was the founder of Saudi dynasty dared to attack and demolish one of the holiest Islamic sites in the world, the sacred shrines of Imam Hassan Mujtaba (AS), Imam Ali Zaynul Abideen (AS), Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (AS), and Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (AS). In the same year, the Saudi government demolished other mausoleums, like the mausoleums and shrines of the Holy Prophet Muhammad's (S.A.W.) mother, wife, grandfather, and other ancestors. They also managed to erase the signs of all the historical Islamic sites and monuments and demolished the graves of more than 200 famous companions and Sahabahs of Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). The Saudi government banned Muslims from reconstructing the shrines and graves from that time till today.

We call the Muslim Ummah to condemn this evil attack that caused the destruction of the holy shrines of Imam Hassan Mujtaba (AS), Imam Ali Zaynul Abideen (AS), Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (AS), and Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (AS) in Madinah Munawwara and ask the Muslim Ummah to demand from the Saudi government to allow Muslims to immediately reconstruct the holy sites in Madinah Munawwarah and Makkah Mukarramah.

Jannatul Baqee

Literally “al-Baqee” means a tree garden. It is also known as Jannatul-Baqee’ due to its sanctity, since in it are buried many of our Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)’s relatives and companions. The first companion of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) to be buried there was ‘Uthman bin Ma’dhoon. He died on 3rd Sha’ban 3 AH. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) ordered certain trees to be felled, and in its midst, he buried his dear companion, placing two stones over the grave. Ibrahim, the son of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) who died later and over whom the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) bitterly wept, was also buried there. The people of Madinah then began to use the site for the burial of their own dead because the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) used to greet those who were buried in Jannatul-Baqee’ saying: “Peace be upon you, O abode of the faithful! God willing, we should soon join you. O Allah! Forgive the fellows of al-Baqee’”.

The burial site was later expanded at al-Baqee’. Nearly seven thousand of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)’s companions were buried there and many of his family members including the Ahlul-Bayt (as) praised in the Holy Quran. They are Sayyida Fatima (as) –the beloved daughter of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.), Imam al-Hasan (as), Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn (as), Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as) and Imam Ja’ffar al-Sadiq (as). Other relatives include: Safiyya and Aatika (his aunts); Fatima bint Asad (his aunt and mother of Imam ‘Ali); ‘Uthaman bin ‘Affaan, the third caliph of the Muslims was initially buried outside al-Baqee’ but later on, due to expansion of the burial ground, his grave was included in the area. In later years, great Muslim scholars like Malik bin Anas and many others were buried there too. Thus al-Baqee’ became a well-known place of great significance to all Muslims. Ibn Batuta, the famous traveler has said, “At al-Baqee are the graves of numerous Muhajireen and Ansaar and many companions of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.), except that most of their names are unknown”.

On 8th Shawwal, Wednesday, in the year 1345 AH, (April 21st 1925) the mausoleums in Jannatul-Baqee’ in Madinah were demolished by King Abdul Aziz ibn Saud.

In the same year i-e., 1925, King Abdul Aziz ibn Saud also demolished the tombs of holy personages at Jannatul-Mu’alla in Makkah Mukarramah where the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)’s mother, wife, grandfather and other ancestors are buried. This day is indeed a day of grief and sorrow for all Muslims.

The US Puppets in Hejaz Muqaddas

The Saudi dynasty was brought to power in Hejaz Muqaddas by the conspiracy of the British government after the fall of the Usmani Caliphate based at Istanbul, Turkey. The main purpose to bring this dictatorial, autocratic and reactionary dynasty to power was to destroy all the Islamic holy sites in the Hejaz Muqaddas and fully control the Hajj pilgrimage from becoming the greatest congregation of the Muslim Ummah to solve the problems of the Muslims in the world.

After the end of the Second World War in 1945, the Saudi rulers came under the complete control of the USA government. The Saudi dynasty changed the name of Hejaz Muqaddas as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that means the Arabia of Saudi family.
The autocratic and dictatorial Saudi rulers suppress all the activities of the Muslim Ummah during their greatest congregation and assembly at Makkah Mukarramah and Madinah Munawwarah during the Hajj ceremony in which all the problems of the Muslims in the world can be easily solved.

On the order of the USA government the Saudi government spends a great part of their oil income to spread the poison of Wahabbi thoughts in the Muslim Ummah and to create sectarian differences and clashes among the Muslims of the world. The USA puppet Saudi rulers have until now deposited more than 1500 billions US dollars in the banks of USA by which the US government is able to sustain the falling value of the US dollar.

    Imām Ja'far ibn Muhammad  al-Sādiq(A.S) said:

 “Iblis [Satan] addresses his troops saying, 'Sow jealousy and dissention between them, for verily these are tantamount to polytheism in the sight of Allāh."

History has not seen a more perverse ideology and man-made set of beliefs than that of the Wahhabi persuasion. Founded over 200 years ago, their physical reign over the nation of Islam’s sacred sites in Mecca and Medina and of present, over the hearts and minds of millions of Muslims, has proved to be one of extremism and tyranny for those who do not subscribe to their man-made religion on many fronts. 

For the followers of the Prophet Muhammad and his Ahlul Bait (peace be upon them all) – the true followers of Islam – this cancer within the Islamic community perpetrated one of the sickest crimes in the year 1925 with the destruction of the graveyard of Al-Baqi in Medina, in present day Saudi Arabia. 

This graveyard, which houses the graves of the wives of the Prophet, many of his companions, his infant son Ibrahim and most importantly, four of the Divinely appointed leaders of the community was desecrated and levelled to the ground on the 8th of Shawwal in the year 1345 AH (April 21, 1925) 

Historians narrate that over seven thousand companions of the Prophet, in addition to Imam Hasan bin Ali, Imam Ali bin Husain, Imam Muhammad bin Ali, and Imam Ja'far bin Muhammad (peace be upon all of them) are also buried in this graveyard which the Prophet himself would visit on a regular basis! 

The followers of the Wahhabi sect continued their rampage in Jannatul Mu`alla in Mecca in which Hazrat Abu Talib, Khadijah binte Khuwaylid (peace be upon them both) and other noble personalities are buried! They were successful in destroying the graves and their markers, and this would have continued in Madina at the grave of the Prophet had it not been for the strong opposition by the Muslim world (and perhaps due to those who are buried beside the Prophet). 

May Allah hasten the return of our Awaited Imam to fill the Earth with justice and to restore the honour and glory which these historical sites once enjoyed.

WORK NOT ONLY FOR THIS WORLD BUT ALSO FOR THE HEREAFTER

Once Amirul Momineen (a.s.) entered the Kufa market. Looking around he found that everyone was busy in buying and selling. He wept profusely and said, “O slaves of the world! O those who work only for it! You spend your day in trade and business and your night in sleep. You neglect the Hereafter due to your business and sleep. When will you get time to gather provisions for the Hereafter? When will you think over your Hereafter?”  A man said, “O Amirul Momineen (a.s.)! We are obliged to earn money for our living. What else can we do?” The Amir replied, “Seeking livelihood through permissible means does not come in the way of the Hereafter. But if you say that we are obliged to gather money, then you have no excuse.” That man began to weep and ran away.  The Amir said, “Come back so that I may explain the matter further.” When he returned the Amir said, “O Slave of God! Be aware that one who works for Hereafter in this world will surely get its reward in the Hereafter and one who works in this world only for this world will get its reward in the form of Hellfire.” Then he recited this verse. So one who prefers only this world for himself will have his abode in hell.[450]

Is the Day of Judgment applicable to Jinns as well?

As the Qur'an says, "And on the day when He shall gather them all together: O assembly of Jinn! you took away a great part of mankind. And their friends from among the men shall say: Our Lord! some of us profited by others and we have reached our appointed term which Thou didst appoint for us. He shall say: The fire is your abode, to abide in it, except as Allah is pleased; surely your Lord is Wise, Knowing." (6:128) This verse explains that the field of Mahshar, where everyone will be gathered, is for both humans and Jinns. Therefore, the Day of Judgment is applicable to Jinns too.

There are several other verses from Sura Rahman which tell us that Jinns will also be accounted during the Day of Reckoning. The Qur'an also states, "On that Day no question will be asked of man or Jinn as to his sin." (55:39) Jinns will also be punished and rewarded, as the Qur'an states, "This is the Hell which the Sinners deny" (55:43) and regarding the rewards of getting damsels "Whom no man or Jinn before them has touched" (55:74).

Understanding this, it implies both men and Jinn will be accounted. Thus, both of them should live a life of awareness with knowledge, wisdom, and fear of Allah. If they become ignorant and show negligence, they will be sent to hell. With respect to this, the Qur'an says, "And certainly We have created for hell many of the Jinn and the men; they have hearts with which they do not understand, and they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear; they are as cattle, nay, they are in worse errors; these are the heedless ones." (7:179)

It implies that those Jinns who do not make use of hearts, eyes, and ears are worse than animals because of their ignorance and negligence.

Is it possible for a Jinn to possess a human being?

Before answering this question, let us consider this verse, "And I have not created the Jinn and the men except that they should serve Me." (51:56) As both of them have been bestowed with wisdom and desires, the duty of all humans and Jinns is to serve the Almighty by controlling their desires and practicing wisdom in the Right Path.

Therefore, Jinns whose desires empower their wisdom (or intellect) are those affected by Shaitan. Those Jinns who are influenced by Shaitan are capable of harming anyone, just like those humans who are influenced by Shaitan are capable of harming anyone.

How can one stay away and be saved from possession by Jinns?

Firstly, if a human lives with Taharat (spiritual purity) and remembrance of God, then no Jinn can cause harm to him. Secondly, one can be saved from the possession of Jinns if one recites Sura Jinn (chapter 72) and Sura Naas (chapter 113) from the Holy Book, and then can do several activities like blowing these chapters on a glass of water and drinking it.

Can evil Jinns or Jinns influenced by Shaitan enter holy shrines, mosques, Islamic centers, or such places?

It is not probable that a Jinn influenced by Satan could enter an Islamic center or such places, as these places are pure and filled with the intent and action of worship. It is also very difficult for Jinn to cause harm to anyone or anything in such places.

What materials are Jinns created of?

Allah has created humans from clay, angels from light, and Jinns from fire. The common factor between Jinns and angels is that both can appear in any form and shape; human, however, does not possess this ability. This appearance of angels is always of a pure kind, whereas Jinns may be impure. Angels possess only intellect, whereas Jinns possess intellect and desire like humans. This would further imply that due to their desires, Jinns are not always pure, there are 37 instances in the Holy Qur'an where Jinns have been mentioned. As the Qur'an says,  "And the Jinn We created before, of intensely hot fire..." (15:27) Another instance about the creation of Jinn mentioned in the Holy Qur'an is, "And He created Jinns from fire free of smoke." (55:15) Thus, it is firmly established that Jinns are created by hot fire, free from smoke.

Thus, the party of the Jinn immediately accepted the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad and the Qur'an as the holy book.

Then the first two verses of Sura Jinn (chapter 72) were revealed to the Prophet as, "Say: It has been revealed to me that a party of the Jinn listened, and they said: 'Surely we have heard a wonderful Qur'an, Guiding to the right way, so we believe in it, and we will not set up any one with our Lord.'" Thus, the party of the Jinn immediately accepted the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad and the Qur'an as the holy book. Now, it is proved that the Qur'an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad for both humans and Jinns. Lovers of Prophet exist from both humans and Jinns. Similarly, enemies of the Prophet exist from among the humans and Jinns. The enemies of Islam used to ascribe various things to Allah, and some of them even associated Jinns with Allah. In this context, a verse was revealed which said, "And they make the Jinn associates with Allah, while He created them, and they falsely attribute to Him sons and daughters without knowledge; glory be to Him, and highly exalted is He above what they ascribe (to Him)." (6:100) Another verse says, "And thus did We make for every prophet an enemy, the satans from among men and Jinn, some of them suggesting to others varnished falsehood to deceive (them), and had your Lord pleased they would not have done it, therefore leave them and that which they forge." (6:112)

What is the significance of Jinns in Islam?

The Holy Qur'an has been revealed for both humans and Jinns as it says, "Say: If men and Jinn should combine together to bring the like of this Qur'an, they could not bring the like of it, though some of them were aiders of others." (17:88) Several other verses from the Holy Qur'an indicate that worship of Allah is required from both the Jinns and humans.

During the revelation of Sura Jinn, according to a tradition, Ibn Abbas said: "When the Holy Qur'an was revealed, Jinns were prevented from ascending towards the skies and several other prayers. Experiencing this, several Jinns came to Mecca to know the reason behind this abandonment. When they entered, they saw and heard Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) reciting Qur'anic verses during Fajr prayer. Hearing his beautiful speech, Jinns became influenced by the Holy Prophet."
