Importance of Friday night and Friday.

* Imam Sadiq (AS) has said: “The Sun has not risen on a day better than Friday.  When the birds of sky meet one another on this day, they greet one another saying: What a good day!”

*  It is related that the Holy Prophet of Islam (SAW) chose Thursday to leave his room for outside fresh air in the beginning of summer and chose Friday to his return to room in the beginning of winter.”

* It is related that Imam Baqir (AS) has said: “If you decide to give charity, delay it until Friday.”

 * Imam Baqir (AS) has also said: “Throughout Friday night God calls:

-Isn’t there any believing servant who calls upon Me until before dawn so that I will grant his worldly and spiritual request?
-Isn’t there any believing servant who repents his sins before down so that I will forgive him?
-Isn’t there any believing servant whose sustenance is meager and asks Me to increase it before dawn so that I will increase his sustenance?
-Isn’t there any ailing and believing servant who asks Me to heal him before dawn so that I will heal him?
-Isn’t there any imprisoned servant who asks Me to free him from prison so that I will free him from prison?
-Isn’t there any oppressed believing servant who asks Me to take his right from the oppressor before dawn so that I will help him and restore his right?

* Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq (A.S.) has said:“The believing servant makes a request to God and God too delays it until Friday.”

* The Holy Prophet of Islam (SAW) has said: “Surely Friday is the master of days and the most glorious day of God.  Rather it is superior to Eid-ul-fitr and Eid-ul-azha.

Friday has five advantages:
-God created Adam (AS) on this day.
-God sent down Adam (AS) from paradise to earth on the same day.
-God took the life of Adam on such a day.
-There are hours in Friday when everyone who requests something from God, it will be granted provided that it is lawful.
-Archangels, the heavens, the earth, winds, mountains, and trees fear that the Last Day occurs on such a day.”

* The children of Jacob asked their father to request god to forgive them.  Jacob said: “I will ask for you forgiveness from, my Lord” (Yunus, verse 98).  Interpreting this verse, Imam Sadiq (AS) has said:
“Jacob delayed asking forgiveness until dawn of Friday night.”
There are two hours on Friday when Duas are answered: one is when Friday leader has completed the sermon and the worshippers are prepared for Friday prayer.

Alms-giving in the way of God will help repay debts and leave blessings behind.....

“Alms-giving in the way of God will help repay debts and leave blessings behind.”

The Imam further said:

“Whenever you become destitute, do business with God through alms-giving.”

 Imam Baqer (AS) has said:

“Surely alms-giving repels seventy afflictions of the world including a bad death.
Surely an alms-giver never dies a bad death.”

It is related that one day Jesus (AS) and his disciples were sitting together when a man passed by them.  Jesus (AS) said to his disciples:

“This man will die soon.  After the passage of some time, they noticed that the man passed by them while he was carrying a load of wood.  The disciples asked: O spirit of God! you said he would die soon where as he is still living.  Jesus said to that man: Put down your load of wood.  He did so and opened it.  They immediately saw that a big black snake with a stone in its mouth was among the wood.  Jesus said to that man: What have you done today?  He said: O spirit of Allah, I had two loaves of bread.  I met a beggar.  I gave one of them to him (wee it not for his charity, that black snake would bite and kill the man).

Imam Sadeq (AS) said:
    *
“Every person who gives alms, God will give a better recompense to his children after his death.”

On verse 36 of the Quranic Chapter Hajj “...and feed the poor man who is contented and beggar...

Imam Sadeq (AS) has been quoted as saying:

“The poor man who is contented is one who asks for something and beggar is your friend.”

Imam Sadeq (AS) was in Mena where a poor man came to him.  The Imam ordered a bunch of grapes to be given to him.  The poor man said:  I do not need it.  I need money.  The Imam said: My God increase your sustenance?  That man went on his way empty-handed.  Then another poor man came along and the Imam gave him three single grapes.  The poor man took those three single grapes saying:

“praise is due to the Lord of the worlds”  who gave my sustenance.  The Imam who saw this scene said to him:  Wait.  The Imam said to his servant: how many Dirhams are on you?  He said: About twenty Dirhams.  The Imam said: Give all Dirhams to him.  The poor man took all Dirhams and said: praise is due to Allah the Lord of the worlds.  O God! This bounty comes from you.  You are One and have no partner.
The

Imam further said: Wait.
Then he took off the shirt he was wearing and said: Put it on.  That man put on the shirt and said; Praise is due to Allah, that gave a shirt and made me happy.  O servant of God! May God reward you.  With these words he said good bye and went away.

The narrator says: we were saying to ourselves: Had he not said good bye, the Imam would have kept on giving away, for every time the poor man said praise is due to Allah, the Imam would give him something.

Eid Al-Fitr, A Day For Thanksgiving- AND ADVANCE INFORMATION TO MAKE U PREPARE

Eid Al-Fitr, A Day For Thanksgiving

The day immediately following the end of the holy month of Ramadan is called Eid-e-Fitr. In other words, it falls on the first day of Shawwal. It is one of the greatest Islamic festivals.

Eid-e-fitr is the Day of Thanksgiving to Allah, forgiving His servants the opportunity to fast and to worship Him in the month of Ramadan. On this Day, Muslims leave their jobs, wear clean clothes, offer special Eid Prayers, and after prayers go to visit one another and take part in festivities. Small children wear beautiful new clothes, and are very busy enjoying the festival. Their angelic faces beam with joy.

Islam wants that all Muslims, whether rich or poor, should enjoy Eid. It has, therefore, commanded all the well-to-do people to pay the 'Zakat-e-Fitr'. This Zakat is paid on the very day of Eid-e-Fitr. It consists of 3 kilograms of one's daily food or its equivalent in cash.

The payment of 'Zakat-e-Fitr' is obligatory upon every person who is adult, sane and free at the time of the sunset on the last day of Ramadan, and is also not dependent upon others for means of subsistence. If the person concerned is the head of a family, it is incumbent upon him to pay his own 'Zakat-e-Fitr' as well.

'Zakat-e-Fitr' is the right of the poor and the needy, and can be spent for those purposes only, for which Zakat, payable on property, is expendable. This includes helping the deserving people and building hospitals, bridges, schools, etc.

Nowadays, Zakat-e-Fitr' is paid without any planning, with the result that the deserving people do not derive any suitable benefit from it. It would be better if the 'Zakat-e-Fitr' paid by all the people, is collected in one place and spent after proper planning, so that the condition of a good number of needy persons may improve.

THE CELEBRATION OF EID-UL-FITR- HOW DO WE PREPARE OURSELVES ON THIS NIGHT AND DAY

Eid-ul-Fitr is linked with the Holy month of Ramadan. It signifies the end of the month of fasting.

In view of the great significance attached to this day of Eid, numerous traditions consisting of prayers and worship of God on this day, have been quoted from the Holy Prophet and his Ahl-al-Bait.

Taking a solemn bath (Ghusl) on the night preceding Eid is highly recommended (Sunnat). This is a night of great sanctity and profound virtues, and should be preferably spent in worship and prayer to God.

Imam Zainul Abedin (a.s.) used to spend this whole night in devotion, and has said: "This night is as important as that of Shab-e-Qadr" (that is to say, the odd night towards the latter part of Ramadan when the Holy Qur'an was first revealed to our Holy Prophet [S.A.W.]).

It is quoted from the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) that "one who offers six Rakat prayers on this night reciting in each Rakat Sura Al-Hamnd  once and Sura Qul Howallah five times God will pardon his sins".

Haris Aawar narrates that Hazrat Ali (A.S.), on this night, after Maghrib prayers, used to offer two Rakats prayers. In the first one he used to recite Sure 'Al-Hamd' once and Sura 'Qul Huwallah' one hundred times, and in the other both the Suras only once. After completion of the prayers he would bow his head in prostration and recite "Atubo Ellallah" 100 times and then would say, "I swear by one (God)! He has the sole command over my life". Whoever will, in this way, offer two Rakats prayers, the Beneficent will positively fulfill any wish begged from Him.

The conception of Eid in Islam is not confined only to celebration extravagance, luxurious feasts, friendly handshakes and embraces. The Muslims should rather devote this day to the worship of God and should beseech Him to approve their virtuous deeds and forgive their sins. This is because the doors of God's pardon are kept open this day and His Blessings are bountiful.

Once Imam Hasan (a.s.) noticed some folks in a most jovial mood merry making on the occasion of Eid. He, turning to his companions said. "God has made this month of Ramadan, a course of action for His slaves to render their due homage to their Lord and earn His pleasure. Some of them who have fasted successfully reached their goal, and those who did not fast have lingered behind and have missed a golden opportunity. When reward is assured for fasting, how strange it is on the part of those who do not fast to indulge in idle pastimes. I swear by God, if the curtains of Divination (Ghaib) wore to be lifted today, both the virtuous and the sinful could afford the physical sight of the rewards of their good and evil deeds respectively".

Amal of Juma tul wida- THE LAPSED NAMAZ MUST BE RECITED

Amal of Juma tul wida

THE RECOMPENSE FOR MISSED PRAYER (kaffarah)
(not a substitute for Qaza Sala)
Ref. Manhaj Da’waat

(Please also see below a question answered by Sayyid M. Rizvi about this Salah.)

Someone said to Imam 'Ali [a] "Master, uncountable prayers have been missed by me, which I have not the power to make up. What should I do? Imam 'Ali [a] said: "He who has missed many prayers and can't make them up, should on the last Friday of the Holy Month of Ramadan (known as Jumatul Wida) pray 4 rakats with one salam (i.e. as one prayer) to have the sins of lapsed prayers forgiven, Insha-Allah.

Please note that the lapsed salat must be recited, since this salat will just absolve us of the sin. This salat is a 4 rakat salat (just like Salatul Dhuhr), to be recited as follows:

In each rakat: Surah al Fatiha Once
Surah al-Ikhlas 25 times
Ayatul Kursi (2:255-257) Once
Surah al-Kawther 15 times

After reciting salaam, recite one salawat on the Prophet [s], the recite Shahadatain. as given below and then the dua below:

“Allahuma Yaa Saabiqal Fawti,
Yaa Saami’as-Sawti
Yaa Muhyi-al Idhwaami Ba’adal Mawti
Swalli Alaa Muhammadin wa Aali Muhammadin.
Waj’allee Farajan Wa Makhrajan
Mimmaa Anaa Feehi Innaka Ta’alamu Walaa A’alamu
Wa Naqdiru Walaa Aqdiru
Wa Anta Allamal Ghuyoobi
Yaa Waahibal Atwaaya
Wa Yaa Ghaafirall Khatwaaya
Yaa Saatiral Uyoobi
Subboohun Quddoosun
Rabbul Malaaikati War-Roohu
Waghfirlee Warham Yaa Rabbee.”

O Allah! Oh He who advances forward.
O He who hears all sounds.
O He who revives the dead bones.
O Allah! Bless Muhammad and his family,
and grant them peace
and grant me ease from what you know and I know not,
from what You have power over and I do not have power over;
O knower of that which is hidden.
O Granter of blessings.
O Who is Pure and Holy,
Lord of the Angels and Spirit.
My Lord, have mercy on me,
and forgive me and overlook what you know (of my faults),
for surely You are the High, the Mighty.
And bless Muhammad and his family all of them,
through Your Mercy,
O Most Merciful of those who show mercy.

About the prayers; Imam 'Ali said that this salat is a Kafarah (recompense) for 700 years of (missed) prayer. The narrator asked Imam that people live for seventy or eighty years (on average). The Imam replied that it will then be a recompense for his parents, relatives and children (descendents).

Please note the question and answer below regarding the above-noted salah.

Question:
I recently was advised that on the last Juma of Ramazan, there is a prayer from Imam Ali(AS) that can be recited in lieu of all the previous qaza prayers. That is that if a person has so many qaza prayers that he doesn't know how many or if it is impossible to make them up then on the last Juma he can recite a four rakat prayer, each rakat consisting of Sura Hamd, 25 times sura Ikhlaas, 1 time Ayatul Kursi, and 15 times sura Kauther. Is this true? Can you give some validity to this?

Answer:

I myself was unaware of such a tradition until the recent Ramadhan when someone in Dallas, TX, showed to me a pamphlet printed in Pakistan which contained that hadith. First of all, express any opinion about the validity or otherwise of this hadith until I have checked in our main hadith sources. Secondly, even without looking at the sanad of that so-called hadith, I have my doubts about it. Even the printed version shown to me in Dallas did not say that it is in lieu of all the previous qaza prayers -- it sounded more like it is the kaffara for not saying the praying on time.

Whatever is the outcome of this hadith, the fact remains that one has to perform the qaza prayers even after praying the namaz you have mentioned in your question.

PLEASE NOTE That The Lapsed Salat Must Be Recited- THERE IS NO EXCUSE

Namaaz-e-Qazaa-e-Umri- This is not to a replacement of Qaza Namaaz but an atonement for them..

I wanted to share this with everyone!

This is not to a replacement of Qaza Namaaz but an atonement for them-

We can all benefit from this ....after all who knows if we will be alive by the ramadhan of next year:

Namaaz-e-Qazaa-e-Umri

Hazrat Amir-ul-mo'mineen (AS) said that any person who has accumulated a lot of Qazaa Namaz (missed a lot of salaat) and does not have the strength to offer them should offer Namaaz-e-qaza-e-umri.

This namaaz is the kaffara to cover 700 years of Qazaa Namaaz. One person asked
Wali-Ullah "but the people of the ummat of Nabi live only 70-100 years atthe most?"

Hazrat Ali (AS) replied that the Namaaz-e-Kaffara covers your whole life's qazaa namaaz,

your parents', your grand parents', your great grand parent's and others going back up to

700 years qazaa namaaz.

When to pray:

On the last Friday of the month of Ramadhan before sunset.

How to pray:

It's a 4 rakaat namaaz with one salaam. In every rakaat recite:Sura-e-Fateha (Alhamd) once; followed by Sura-e-Ikhlaas (25 times)

Ayatul-Kursi  (once)

Sura-e-Kauthar (15 times)

The Holy Qur'an says: "If someone trusts Allah, He will suffice Him.
He will surely bring about what He decrees. Allah has set a measure for
everything". (Surah al-Talaq, 65:3)

THE LAST FRIDAY of Ramadan is marked around the world as Yaum al Quds.

THE LAST FRIDAY of Ramadan is marked around the world as Yaum al Quds.

International Day of Al-Quds (Rooz-e jahaany-e Qods in Persian: روز جهانی قدس), is an annual event opposing Israel's control of Jerusalem, (Al-Quds in Arabic: القـُدْس). Anti-Zionist demonstrations are held on this day in some Muslim and Arab countries and by Muslim and Arab communities around the world, but especially in Iran where the occasion was first suggested. It is held each year on the last Friday of Ramadan. Jerusalem Day is not an Islamic religious holiday but a political event open to both Muslims and non-Muslims alike, and thus observance is not obligatory in Islam.

The parade originated in Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The observance was suggested by Ayatollah Khomeini, then Supreme Leader of Iran, in August of that year, saying

I invite Muslims all over the globe to consecrate the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan as Jerusalem Day and to proclaim the international solidarity of Muslims in support of the legitimate rights of the Muslim people of Palestine.
For many years, I have been notifying the Muslims of the danger posed by the usurper Israel which today has intensified its savage attacks against the Palestinian brothers and sisters, and which, in the south of Lebanon in particular, is continually bombing Palestinian homes in the hope of crushing the Palestinian struggle. I ask all the Muslims of the world and the Muslim governments to join together to sever the hand of this usurper and its supporters. I call on all the Muslims of the world to select as Jerusalem Day the last Friday in the holy month of Ramadan - which is itself a determining period and can also be the determiner of the Palestinian people’s fate - and through a ceremony demonstrating the solidarity of Muslims world-wide, announce their support for the legitimate rights of the Muslim people. I ask God Almighty for the victory of the Muslims over the infidels."

Why an international day of Quds?

As many of us are aware, the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan has been classified as Al-Quds Day by the leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, the great Ayatollah Imam Khomeini.

This "international day" of observance was introduced to raise our voices to liberate Al-Aqsa Mosque and also to express solidarity with our oppressed Palestinian brothers and sisters who have been facing great trials not only now but for the past 60 years by the Zionist-Apartheid system of Israel. Despite the knowledge of this clear case of oppression, unfortunately there are a significant number of Muslims who pose some concerns and display a lack of passion for the Quds crisis.

Of all cases of oppression, why did Imam Khomeini dedicate the last Friday of Ramadan for Al-Quds?

Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that the usurped land of Al-Quds is not just any land; it is a holyland that holds great religious significance. In fact, the war which Israel is fighting against the Palestinian people is really a war against Islam and in opposition to the Muslims, and the means to do so is by desecrating one of the most sacred Islamic holy lands such as Al-Quds. Furthermore, the oppressors (Zionists) of Al-Quds are one of our most lethal enemies today, so there is greater urgency in fighting them over other oppressors. Perhaps one of the reasons why Imam Khomeini saw it necessary to highlight this particular case is because the land of Quds and Masjid Al-Aqsa will be one of the key items on the agenda of Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance) and Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) at the time of reappearance. We cannot compare Al-Quds (which means 'holy', derived from the word 'Muqaddas') with any usurped land. The reason is because the land of Al-Quds is a symbol which represents Allah, and thus becomes holy and constitutes Sha'aer Allah (signs of Allah); hence desecrating it is a direct offense to Allah.

As the holy month of Ramadan revives the spirit of unity and brotherhood among Muslims, it was certainly not a coincidence that Imam Khomeini chose a Friday during this month to dedicate for this most noble purpose of joining our hands together as a unified nation, no matter what school of thought we belong to or what nation we come from. When the Muslim world has tasted an example of what the poor and needy suffer by fasting from food and water throughout this holy month, we naturally become more sympathized and united for the cause of the oppressed. Hence, the peak of spiritual recognition in this aspect becomes more apparent towards the latter part of Ramadan, which makes the timing all the appropriate to dedicate as Al-Quds Day. We all share the same concern for Al-Quds and Baitul Maqdis, and therefore, our collective protest on this specified day, particularly as the world is well aware of the Muslims observance of the holy month of fasting, creates a greater effect and speaks a louder voice for the cause of standing up against oppression.

Why do we not have the same passion equally distributed to other cases of human rights violation, such as in Tibet, Darfur, etc?

One may continue in this endless and futile chain of asking "why not this?" and "why not that?" However this type of fruitless questioning will not bring a solution to the existing problems, and there is no value in starting a sequence of comparisons whenever passion is expressed about an issue or a noble cause. After all, one can argue why so much passion about the tragedy of Karbala in which only around 72 people were killed, while thousands of lives were taken in the Holocaust! The comparison here is inappropriate as there are other factors that come into play when assessing a case of oppression.

Granted this world is filled with oppression from the North to the South Pole, and that will be the case until the Imam of Our Time (may Allah hasten his reappearance) fills the earth with justice and equality. There is no disagreement that it is the duty of every human to stand up against any and all oppression we witness, and as the saying goes, "He who witnesses oppression and is silent is like he who condones it and takes part in it." It would be great if there are demonstrations for every case of injustice that takes place in this world till the end of time, and we should exert all efforts to initiate, organize, and participate in such noble efforts. However, it may be beyond our capacity and resources to tackle every case of oppression to the same degree. We should at least exert our efforts in the most efficient way possible and prioritize with the most critical issues at hand, under the guidance of our respected religious leaders, which by default represents all other cases as well.

Why boycott companies that support the Zionist state?

One of the important ways of raising our voice on Al-Quds Day is to announce our boycott of all companies which support the apartheid economy of the Zionist state as a part of the larger Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. By implementing consumer boycott of those Western companies which sponsor the Apartheid state, these companies are being educated about how their close relationship with the Zionist apartheid state is a financial liability.

Part of this education requires participants of the boycott to contact the companies and inform them why you are boycotting. It is an ethical and moral issue that goes hand in hand with the idea of Bara'at (dissociation from falsehood). We learn a great example from the young daughter of one of the close companions of Imam Ali named Abul Aswad Al-Du'ali. When she learned that the honey which she just consumed was given as a gift from the oppressive caliph of her time, she protested by voluntarily vomiting everything she swallowed. It was a feeling of disgust that she felt even though the honey was not forbidden from the jurisprudence perspective. Rather, it was a moral stance by which she voiced her condemnation to Muawiya and thereby stamped her support and devotion to Imam Ali (peace be upon him).

Passive Muslims Avoiding Politics

Unfortunately, there are some factions even among the Shia brethren who have stepped aside when it comes to joining the protests on Al-Quds Day or initiating a rally locally. Some reasons for their silence are the desire to stay away from "politics" or any controversial issue that may harm them or their worldly positions. Some fear that their citizenship or jobs be taken away from them. To those who use the pretext of "politics", we say that the issue of illegitimate caliphate assumed by Yazid in the Karbala crisis is also considered to be "politics". Yet we observe that Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) stood up against falsehood and oppression, even if it is political, and even if it cost him his own life as well as the lives of his beloved ones. Surely, if we seek to gain knowledge of the purified lives of our Imams, we will realize that every one of them were involved in the political environments of that time and struggled to stand up for the truth!

Al-Quds Speaks for All Cases of Oppression

It is imperative for us to bear in mind that when we raise our voices on Al-Quds Day, it is to stand up against oppression not just in Palestine but all over the world, including Bahrain, Yemen, Egypt, and Tunisia. It is the day for the weak and oppressed to confront the arrogant powers of Zionism and the Yazids of our time. Likewise, when we lament and mourn over the tragedy of Imam Hussain, which is the greatest of calamities in the history of mankind, we are in essence voicing our condemnation for all other oppressions, and we recognize that Karbala is a representation of "enjoining the good and forbidding the evil" which is not limited to the land of Karbala nor to the day of Ashura. When we participate and promote the yearly Al-Quds rally on the last Friday of Ramadan, remember that we are also protesting the usurped land of Fadak which was unjustly seized from Lady Fatima Zahra (peace be upon her)! From there the tragedy started, and the illegitimate Sunnah was followed afterward!

For those of us who are hesitant to participate in Al-Quds rallies or have any affiliation with organizations that stand up for this cause, it is a good time to reassess our faith as the holy month of Ramadan culminates. Surely it is contradicting to claim that we are preparing ourselves for the return of our Imam when we are struggling within ourselves to protest against one of the most obvious cases of oppression in our present time. Yet again, it is a commonly observed phenomenon that Truth is usually supported by few while the majority tends to lean towards Falsehood where ever it is convenient. We hope and pray that we are not among those whom Imam Hussain described, "Verily, people are the slaves of the world, and religion is just on their tongues. They are attentive to it as long as their material benefits are provided, but when they are tested, the number of true devotees dwindles!"

FOR FRIDAY- WHAT U CAN DO......

GHUSL :Holy Prophet said:"O Ali! People must bathe [at least] once every seven days, so do Ghusl (bathe) every Friday, even if you have to buy the water with [the money set aside for] your provision of that day and go without food, for there is no recommended act of worship greater than it."[Reference: Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 81, p. 129, no. 18]

SADAQAH Imam Ja'far Sadiq (a.s.) said, “My father was having less money and had more expenses ,despite that he used to  give Sadaqah every Friday. He used to say that the reward of Sadaqah on Friday is two-fold, for Friday is better than all other days.” According to Imam Jafar bin Muhammad As Sadiq alms and charity, given on Friday, collect and gather, in return, compensation, what is due multiplied by 1000 times. Give out in the name of Allah as soon as the night begins.

SALAWAAT The narrator asked Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.), “Which is the best deed on Friday?” Imam (a.s.) replied, “Reciting Durood on Muhammad (s.a.w.s.) and his progeny a hundred times after Salaat-e-Asr on Friday. It is better to recite more than that.” (Sawabul A'amaal )

FAQ ON ZAKAT AL-FITRAH.............

(
According to Fataawa of Ayatullah Sayyid Ali al-Husayni Seestani)

Q. What is Zakatul Fitrah?
A: It is religious tax/alms (zakat) paid on the day when Muslims break the fasting period at the end of the month of Ramadhan. This alms is known as Zakat al-Fitrah.

Q. What do the Qur'an and Hadith say about Fitrah?
A: Imams (a) say that the verses: Indeed whosoever purifies himself shall achieve success, and glorifies the Name of his Lord and prays (87:14 & 15) refer to giving of Fitrah and saying prayers on Eid al-Fitr. Imam Ja`far as- Sadiq (a) said: for your fast to be accepted, give zakât.

Q. When does Fitrah become wajib?
A. Payment of Fitrah becomes obligatory after sunset on the eve of Eid al- Fitr. The Fitrah should be kept aside and paid on Eid al-Fitr before Eid prayers or before midday for those who cannot say their Eid prayers. It is necessary to have obligatory intention (niyyah) of giving Fitrah for God's pleasure only.

Q. What happens if someone forgets or does not give Fitrah on time?
A. If one does not give out or set aside the Fitrah within the due time, he should give the Fitrah later, on the basis of precaution, without making the niyyah of adaa or qadhaa but only Qurbatan Ilallah.

Q. Can we give Fitrah in advance?
A. Giving Fitrah before the eve of Eid al-Fitr is not permissible. However, if you wish to send Fitrah earlier so that it reaches the needy on time, then you can send it as a temporary loan to the needy and then change your intention from loan to Fitrah on the eve of Eid al-Fitr.

Q. To whom is Fitrah obligatory?
A. Paying Fitrah is obligatory on every Muslim who is mature (baligh), sane, financially able, and conscious on the eve of Eid al-Fitr. Fitrah should also be paid on behalf of all dependents (e.g. wife, children) whom one supports financially.

Q. When is a host required to pay Fitrah for his guest?
A. If a person invites another person to his house on the eve of Eid al-Fitr and if the guest is present at the host's place at the time of the sunset then it is obligatory for the host to pay Fitrah for his guest.

Q. What happens if the guest arrives after the sunset on Eid night?
A. In this case the guest will pay his/her own Fitrah and it is not obligatory on the host to pay Fitrah for the guest.

Q. What happens if a guest comes uninvited and is present at the time of the sunset on the eve of Eid al-Fitr?
A. Ayatullah Sayyid As-Sistani says that the host should still pay the Fitrah as an obligatory precaution. However, Marhum Ayatullah Sayyid al-Khui was of the opinion that is recommended for the host to pay Fitrah of an uninvited guest.

Q. How much should we pay for Fitrah?
A. Fitrah for a person is given on a weight of three kilograms (one sa`a) on any food commodity like wheat, barley, rice, millet, raisins or dates. Ayatullah Seestani is of the opinion that the item that is not a staple food in your town should not be given in Fitrah. Say, for example, if millet is not a staple in Vancouver then Vacouver mumineen should not pay Fitrah on millet.

Q. Can we give cash value of any commodity mentioned above?
A. Yes, cash value in lieu of any foodstuff mentioned can be given as Fitrah. Thus, if a kilo of rice costs $2.00, the cash value of Fitrah on rice per person would be $6.00. We recommend, Fitrah on basmati rice to be Canadian Dollars 7.00 for residents of Canada and US Dollars 6.00 for US residents. (Please check prices for other items in your areas.)

Q. Whom should we give the Fitrah to?
A. It is given to the needy who are unable to meet their own or their dependants annual living expenses, nor do they have the means to do so through earning. Ayatullah As-Seestani says that the needy who is given the fitrah must be a Shi`ah Ithna `Ashari.

Q. Who should not be given the Fitrah?
A. A needy who: consumes alcohol, does not say his daily prayers (salat), commits sins openly, or he who is known to use the Fitrah in sinful way.

Q. Are there any additional rules that we need to be aware of?
A. Following are some important rules: (i) Fitrah should not be sent outside the town one resides in, if there are deserving mumineen in that town. (ii) Fitrah from a non-Sayyid cannot be given to a needy Sayyid; the reverse is permissible. (iii) A needy should be given at least one Fitrah (iv) Amongst the needy, relatives should be preferred over others when giving Fitrah, next in line are neighbors and then the learned.
