As Salaam Alaikum (May Peace Be Upon You),

5 more villages were drowned in Sindh on Monday, and more people were cut off from the outside world by waters splashing down from a full lake that could well overflow and wreak yet more damage on Sindh Province. Meanwhile, UNICEF is warning that 100,000 children made homeless by the floods are in danger of starving to death for lack of food. Some 100,000 more people have been displaced after a lake burst in southern Pakistan where massive floods have already affected millions of people, a UN spokesman said Tuesday,

The United Nations held a high-level meeting on Pakistan flood relief on Sunday. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon emphasized the great need for the world to come together to help the country recover from the recent devastating flooding.

[Ban Ki-moon, U.N. Secretary General]:  "The floods in Pakistan are a global disaster, a global challenge, and a global test of solidarity. This challenge will require our continued focus and commitment to relief, recovery and reconstruction by everyone in the months ahead… The people of Pakistan are counting on the support of the international community. Let us work to help them rebuild their communities, their livelihoods and their lives.”

The floods in Pakistan began more than a month ago and swept through the country, affecting more than 20 million people, damaged or destroyed nearly 1.9 million homes and killed 1,700 people. On Friday the U.N. asked member states for $2 billion to help Pakistan. This is the largest natural disaster appeal in the history of the U.N. and the Islamic Information Center asks you to donate as much as you can to help the innocent people of Pakistan.

DOJ Monitoring 8 Cases Of Alleged Discrimination Against Muslim Institutions, Prisoners

TPM

The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division has begun monitoring eight separate cases of alleged discrimination against Muslims under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) since May 2010, according to a report issued Tuesday. "We see a spike, regrettably," said Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez in a speech before the American Constitution Society. A spokeswoman declined to name the individual investigations, but confirmed that the department was monitoring those cases and had not yet opened full investigations. Controversies over the construction of Mosques -- most notably over the Islamic cultural center in Manhattan -- have flared up around the country in recent months. In Tennessee, opponents of the construction of a Mosque have filed a lawsuit to prevent it from being built. The FBI and ATF are investigating a case of arson following a heated debate over the proposed religious center. In California, individuals opposed to the building of a Mosque were asked to bring their dogs to a protest. Another controversy sprung up in Wisconsin.

Anti Mosque Group to Hold Session Discussing Mosques in New York

The Californian

Local authors critical of Islam and a pastor from a church in Simi Valley will speak at a lecture Monday that organizers say will attempt to explain why residents should oppose plans for a mosque in Temecula's Nicolas Valley, a rural community in the northwest corner of the city. The mosque is being proposed by the Islamic Center of Temecula Valley, which serves a group of about 150 Muslim families in the area who have been saving money for years to bankroll the project. The plans could go before the Planning Commission in mid-November if a traffic study is completed on time. Bakh is scheduled to be joined Monday by James Horn, author of a book about Islamic influence in U.S. government, and Kevin Diekilman, a pastor at Simi Hills Christian Church in Simi Valley. Diekilman, who identified himself as a nondenominational Christian, is scheduled to talk about, what he called, the "Christian" perspective on Islam.

Bahraini Sectarian authorities in Manama revoke nationality of Shiite ayatollah

Spero News

The decision is linked to a series of measures against the Shiites, who are the majority of citizens. Measures against another cleric and arrests among those who participated in protests against discrimination. Government concern over increasing power of the Shiites in the region. The government of Bahrain has withdrawn the passport of one of the most influential Shiite leaders, Ayatollah Hussein al-Najati, who is also the representative of the Grand Ayatollah Ali al Sistani, highest Shiite religious authority in Iraq, in the small kingdom. The decision to revoke the nationalities of both al-Najati and his family, apparently for bureaucratic reasons, falls within a range of measures that the authorities are taking against the majority Shiite community, in the lead up to parliamentary elections, scheduled for October 23. On Sunday, just hours before the announcement of the decision against al-Najati, another penalty against a Shiite cleric, Sheik Abdul Jaleel Al-Miqdad, was unveiled.  He has been banned for two weeks, from leading Friday prayers. The measures appear as a reaction to demonstrations and Al-Miqdad protests in August over the arrests of more than 250 Shiites.

Kuwait strips Shiite of citizenship

M and C

At the recommendation of Interior Minister Sheikh Jaber Khaled al- Sabah, the Kuwaiti cabinet decided Sunday to strip Shiite cleric Yasser al-Habib of his citizenship for 'undermining Kuwait's national interests and social system,' according to the English daily Kuwait Times. The government said that his remarks prompted the Ministry of the Interior to ban all public gatherings on Monday. The Kuwait Times reported that Shiite member of Parliament Saleh Ashour warned that withdrawing a citizenship for religious or political reasons was dangerous and would open the door for groups to pressure and blackmail parliament.

Increasing Tajikistan Violence Worries Neighbors

VOA News

A deadly ambush in a remote Tajikistan valley in Central Asia is sending shock waves all the way to Moscow. Helicopter gun ships thundered up valleys of the Pamir mountains looking for Islamic guerrillas who ambushed a military convoy, killing 25 soldiers and wounding another 20.  But this military search and destroy operation was not in Afghanistan, it was in its normally quiet northern neighbor, Tajikistan. Observers worry that Afghanistan's deadly mix of Islamic fundamentalism and drug trading is spilling into Tajikistan, the poorest of the five Central Asian nations that once were Soviet republics. Professor Kevin Jones has traveled extensively through Tajikistan: "These are still incredibly porous borders, and there are numerous places where it is quite easy for groups, organizations, individuals, to cross," said Kevin Jones. "So the ability to move from northern Afghanistan to parts of eastern Tajikistan, to parts of southern Tajikistan is quite easy."
First batch of Thai Muslim pilgrims receive Saudi visas to make Hajj
MCOT

Saudi visas have been granted to the first batch of 392 Thai Muslim pilgrims to make the Hajj religious pilgrimage to Mecca, according to Culture Minister Nipit Intarasombat. However, he said the visas for the first batch of pilgrims was ready as the request was submitted last week, but visas for the second batch could not be processed due to a shortage of staff at the embassy, he said. When embassy staff who are currently on leave return to work, the embassy will inform the Department of Religious Affairs, which is in charge of submitting the visa requests for Thai pilgrims. The minister asked the embassy to inform the department immediately when it is able to process more visas. If the embassy can begin handling the documents tomorrow, it will be very good because there will be only 12 working days left as the first group of pilgrims is set to leave Thailand on October 8. One thousand visas per day can be processed, according to embassy sources.

Shariah Banks Targeted to Lift Senegal, Pakistan Poverty: Islamic Finance

Bloomberg

Senegal, Pakistan and Afghanistan, among the world’s 50 poorest nations, are turning to Islamic banking to spur economic growth by encouraging people to take out loans and open savings accounts. Outstanding domestic bank lending accounted for 3.5 percent of Afghanistan’s gross domestic product in 2008, 25 percent in Senegal, 27 percent in Nigeria and 46 percent in Pakistan, according to data compiled by the World Bank. The rates compare with 224 percent in the U.S. and 115 percent in Malaysia, a global hub for finance that conforms with Shariah principles. Developing Islamic nations have shunned banking in part because of the religion’s ban on interest, limiting access to funds for project financing and stunting business growth, according to the International Monetary Fund. Governments should improve regulations, products and institutions that comply with Shariah law to accelerate the industry’s development, Patrick Imam and Kangni Kpodar, economists at the IMF, said in a telephone interview from Washington on Sept. 14.

Nigerian Muslim Cleric Cautions Against Political Thuggery

All Africa

A Muslim cleric, Malam Abdulbasir Isa Nguwar- Maikawu, Saturday cautioned youths of Abaji Area Council not to allow themselves to be used as political thugs by politicians during the forth coming elections. Maikawu, who made the call during the closing of this year's Ramadan Tafsir organised by the Abaji branch of Jama'atu Izalatul Bidi'ah Wa'ikamati Sunnah (JIBWIS), lamented that majority of youths are being used as political thugs and thereby end up as nuisances to society. He said there was need for youths to engage in trading rather than allow themselves to be used as thugs, adding that Islam advocates for one to stand up for his means of livelihood rather than engaging in immorality. "It is imperative for youths to engage in trading business or learn skills rather than remain idle," he said.

And why should ye not fight in the cause of God and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated [and oppressed]? -- men, women, and children, whose cry is: "Our Lord! Rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from thee one who will protect; and raise for us from thee one who will help!" (Surah 4:75)
Remember thy Lord inspired the angels [with the message]: "I am with you: give firmness to the Believers: I will instill terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them." Acne and Pimples : Prevention and Treatments

Pimples are tiny skin lesions or inflammations of the skin. They are commonly caused by clogged or infected pores. They may appear as deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) on the face, neck, chest, back and sometimes shoulders.

Apply a honey mask to your face once or twice a week - Honey has antibacterial properties so it is great for disinfecting and healing minor blemishes. It is also gentle on sensitive skin.

Keep your hair off your face - If you have long hair or bangs, pull your hair off your face. Your hair contains oils as well, and will contribute to your breakouts. You'll also want to wash your hair everyday and after workouts

Do not pick or squeeze your blackheads and pimples - As tempting as it may be, do not squeeze, scratch, rub or touch your pimples and blackheads.

Eating heavy breakfast in the morning forces your body to stop this cleansing process and to start digesting food.

Fresh, ripe fruits on the other hand require very little digestion. So eating a fruits in the morning gives your body few more hours to do the detox and repair work.

Did you know that while you sleep your body is detoxifying and cleansing out the waste material from previous day? This is very important for healthy skin as these toxins and waste material can cause acne and other skin problems.

Wash your face 3 times a day with a good acne cleanser.

Our skin heals itself when you sleep. Your entire body heals itself in your sleep. A night without sleep may lead to more pimples. Make it a habit to leave your worries behind and get a good night's sleep. Work out more earlier in the day. Get some exercise before evening. It helps.

The Miracles of Allah in Rain

Its raining and pouring here so I thought hey let me post something on rain , a taken for grated  miracle of Allah, and something we sometimes hate (I really love cold rainy days… am I weird )

Rain is one of the most important factors for the permanence of life on earth. It is a prerequisite for the continuation of activity in a region. Rain, which carries great importance for all living things, including human beings, is mentioned in various verses of the Qur’an, where substantial information is given about the formation of rain, its proportion and effects. This information, which never could have been known by the people of the time, shows us that the Qur’an is the word of Allah.

The Proportion of Rain

In  Surah Zukhruf, rain is defined as water sent down in “due measure.” The verse is as follows:

وَالَّذِي نَزَّلَ مِنَ السَّمَاء مَاء بِقَدَرٍ فَأَنشَرْنَا بِهِ بَلْدَةً مَّيْتًا كَذَلِكَ تُخْرَجُونَ

“He sends down (from time to time) water from the sky in due measure, and We raise to life therewith a land that is dead. Even so will you be raised (from the dead). (Surah Zukhruf 443:11)

This “measure” mentioned in the verse has to do with a couple of characteristics of rain. First of all, the amount of rain that falls on the earth is always the same. It is estimated, that in one second, 16 million tones of water evaporate from the earth. This number is equal to the amount of water that drops on the earth in one second. This means that water continuously circulates in a balanced cycle according to a “measure.”

Another measure related with rain is about its falling speed. The minimum altitude of rain clouds is 1,200 meters. When dropped from this height, an object having the same weight and size as a rain drop, would continuously accelerate and fall on the ground with a speed of 558 km/h. Certainly, any object that hits the ground with that speed would cause great damage. If rain happened to fall in the same way, all harvested lands would be destroyed, residential areas, houses, and cars would be damaged, and people would not be able to walk around without taking extra precautions. What is more, these calculations are made just for clouds at a height of 1,200 meters; there are also rain clouds at altitudes of 10,000 meters. A rain drop falling from such a height could normally reach a very destructive speed.

But this is not how it works; no matter from what height they fall, the average speed of rain drops is only 8-10 km/h when they reach the ground. The reason for this is the special form they take. This special form increases the friction effect of the atmosphere and prevents acceleration when the rain drops reach a certain speed “limit”.

This is not all about the “measures” of rain. For instance, in the atmospheric layers where it starts to rain, the temperature may fall as low as 400 C below zero. Despite this, rain drops never turn into ice particles. (This would certainly mean a fatal threat to the living things on the earth.) The reason is that the water in the atmosphere is pure water. As is well-known, pure water hardly freezes even at very low temperatures.

The Formation of Rain

How rain forms remained a great mystery for people for a long time. Only after weather radar was invented, was it possible to discover the stages by which rain is formed.  The formation of rain takes place in three stages. 1st the “raw material” of rain rises up into the air. 2nd clouds are formed. 3rd rain drops appear.
These stages are clearly defined in the Qur’an centuries ago where precise information is given about the formation of rain:

“It is Allah who sends the Winds, and they raise the Clouds: then does He spread them in the sky as He wills, and break them into fragments, until you see rain-drops issue from the midst thereof: then when He has made them reach such of his servants as He wills, behold, they do rejoice!”(Surah Rum 30:48)

1st Stage: “It is Allah Who sends the winds…”

Countless air bubbles formed by the foaming in the oceans continuously burst and cause water particles to be ejected towards the sky. These particles, which are rich in salt, are then carried away by winds and move upwards in the atmosphere. These particles, which are called aerosols, form clouds by collecting around themselves the water vapor, which again ascends from the seas, as tiny drops by a mechanism called “water trap”

2nd Stage: ” …and they raise the Clouds: then does He spread them in the sky as He wills, and break them into fragments…”

The clouds form from the water vapor that condenses around the salt crystals or the dust particles in the air. Because the water drops in these are very small (with a diameter between 0.01 and 0.02 mm), the clouds are suspended in the air and they spread in the sky. Thus the sky is covered with clouds.

3rd Stage: “…until you see rain-drops issue from the midst thereof.”
Water particles that surround salt crystals and dust particles thicken and form rain drops. So, the drops, which become heavier than air, depart from the clouds, and start to fall on the ground as rain.
Every stage in the formation of rain is told in the verses of the Qur’an. Furthermore, these stages are explained in the right sequence. Just as with many other natural phenomena in the world, it is again the Qur’an that provides the most correct explanation about this phenomenon as well, and more, that has announced these facts to people centuries before they were discovered by science

Life Given to a Dead Land

In the Qur’an, many verses call our attention to a particular function of rain, which is “giving life to a dead land”:

وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ الرِّيَاحَ بُشْرًا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَحْمَتِهِ وَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً طَهُورًا
لِنُحْيِيَ بِهِ بَلْدَةً مَيْتًا وَنُسْقِيَهُ مِمَّا خَلَقْنَا أَنْعَامًا وَأَنَاسِيَّ كَثِيرًا

“And it is He, Who drives the winds to be the harbingers of His mercy: then He sends down pure water from the sky. so that He may revive the dead land, and quench the thirst of many of His creatures from among beasts and men”(Surah al-Furqan 25:48- 49)

In addition to furnishing the earth with water, which is an inevitable need of living beings, rain also has a fertilization effect.
Rain drops that reach the clouds after being evaporated from the seas, contain certain substances “that will give life” to a dead land. These “life-giving” drops are called “surface tension drops”.Surface tension drops form on the top level of the sea surface which is called the “micro layer” by biologists. In this layer, which is thinner than one tenth of a millimeter, there are many organic leftovers caused by the pollution of microscopic algae and zooplankton. Some of these leftovers select and collect within themselves some elements which are very rare in sea water, such as phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and some heavy metals like copper, zinc, cobalt and lead. These “fertilizer”-laden drops are lifted up into the sky by the winds and after a while they drop on the ground inside the rain drops. Seeds and plants on the earth find numerous metallic salts and elements essential for their growth here in these rain drops. This event is revealed in another verse of the Qur’an:

وَنَزَّلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً مُبَارَكًا فَأَنْبَتْنَا بِهِ جَنَّاتٍ وَحَبَّ الْحَصِيدِ

“And We send down from the sky rain laden with blessing, and We produce therewith gardens and grain for harvests.”(Surah Qaf 50:9)

Salts that fall with rain are small examples of certain elements (calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc.) used for increasing fertility. The heavy metals found in these types of aerosols are other elements that increase fertility in the development and production of plants.

A barren land can be furnished with all the essential elements for plants in a 100-year period just with these fertilizers dropped with the rain. Forests also develop and are fed with the help of these sea-based aerosols. In this way, 150 million tons of fertilizer falls on the total land surface every year. If there were no natural fertilization like this, there would be very little vegetation on the earth, and the ecological balance would be impaired.

What is more interesting is that this truth, which could only be discovered by modern science, was revealed by Allah in the Qur’an centuries ago.
