for everyone
It’s that time of the year when you want to stay in and sip cups of latte under a blanket. What better way to spend winter, right? But it is also the season of colds and flus. Here are other foods that will not just keep you warm, but will keep you fit through winter too
Sweet potatoes
Sweet potatoes are highly nutritious roots. “Roots are excellent foods for winter as they provide you with warmth,” says Mumbai-based consultant dietician Dr Sunita Dube. They are also a good source of dietary fibre and carbohydrates. They are also a good source of Vitamins A and C and a good source of minerals like manganese and copper. So have them, boiled, baked or even in a soup!

Another root to have this season is potato. These are a good healthy source of carbs and dietary fibre and are rich in Vitamin A. So have ‘em baked, roasted, grilled or even in a potato-leek soup.
Spinach
“Greens are good for you during winter too as they are rich in antioxidants,” says dietician Maithili Pashtekar. Antioxidants perk you up and keep winter blues at bay. Spinach is also a good source of iron and calcium. So, whip up those soups and juices to start your day with!
Sesame seeds
Sesame seeds will keep you warm too. “Sesame or til chikkis are best eaten during winter as they produce heat in our body and are a good source of calcium too,” says Maithili. It is best had after a meal as it aides digestion. It is a good source of minerals like magnesium, iron, manganese and copper. These seeds helps your skin to retain moisture too!
Peanuts
“Peanuts are rich in antioxidants,” says Dr Sunita. These nuts also provide warmth to our system. Peanuts are a good source of vitamin E and B3. What’s more, because it is a good source of monounsaturated fats, it is a heart-friendly food too .
Bajra and Jowar
Millets like bajra and jowar also make for great meals during winter. “They are rich in calcium,” says Dr Sunita. Winter is the time we fortify our body and these millets help in absorption of calcium and build muscle tissue, she goes on to say. So make a meal of bhakris with jowar or bajra flour and spicy garlic chutney!
Oily Fish
Oily fish are a good source of vitamin D. “Vitmain D levels could go down during winter,” says Maithili. Moreover, they are a good source of omega 3 fats that will help prevent mood swings by elevating the serotonin levels in your body.
Pomegranate
“Pomegranates are a good source of polyphenols, a powerful antioxidant,” says Dr Sunita. It is also a good source of minerals like calcium and phosphorus. “This combination works well in boosting our immunity,” says Dr Sunita.

Here are a Few More Tips from Dr Sunita for a Healthy, Happy Winter
  • Include a lot of berries like strawberries and blueberries in your diet as these are rich in antioxidants and will perk you up in no time.
  • Don’t forget to keep yourself hydrated even during winter. It is essential not only to keep your system functioning smoothly, but beautiful skin too.
  • Avoid rich foods, eg. deep fried foods and cheese. These are unhealthy at all times. And you won’t notice the extra pounds you have put on until summer!
  • Choose to drink herbal teas like green tea, jasmine and chamomile over tea and coffee to prevent ODing on caffeine.
A reliable tradition from Hazrat Ali  (a.s) states that when a person enters his house he should offer salutation and if his house is not present he should say:
Transliteration: ASSALAMO ' ALAINA MINA RABBENA
May there be peace on us from our God.

When he is inside the house he should recite sure Qul Huvallaho Ahad as it keeps away poverty and anxiety

When one has to go out for some special work then one should go on Thursday morning and recite those verses from Aale Imran which are given below, also recite Ayatal Kursi, Inna Anzalna and surae Alhmad. Those verses are:
Transliteration: INNA FEE KALQIS-SAMAVATE VAL-ARZE VAKH-TELAFIL-LAILE VANNAHARE LA-AYATIL-LE-OOLIL - ALABABA

Verily, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alteration of the night and the day, there are signs for men who possess wisdom.
Those who remember Allah standing and sitting and reclining on their sides and think (Seriously) in the creation of the heaven and the earth saying ‘O’ Our Lord! Thou hast not created (all) this in vain! Glory be to Thee! Save us then from the torment of the (Hell) fire’.
O’ our lord! whomsoever Thou causeth to enter the (hell) fire, surely Thou hast put him to disgrace; there is not, for the unjust, any of the helpers.
O’ Our Lord! We have indeed heard the voice of a Crier (Messenger), calling (us) unto faith, saying, “Believe ye in your Lord!” therefore “Forgive us then our sins and remove away from us our evil deeds and cause us to die with the virtuous ones”.
O’ Our Lord! and give us what Thou didst promise us through Thy Prophets, and disgrace us not on the Day of Resurrection; Verily, Thou breakest not Thy Promise”. (Quran 3: 190-194).

Hazrat Imam Musa Kadhim (a.s) says, “Any oppressed who recites the following Dua’a for vengeance, Insha Allah revenge will be taken from the oppressor.”

O’ my Rescuer in my difficulties; O’ my Helper in my afflictions; Guard me with the eye that slept not, and suffice me with the pillar of Might which cannot be reached; O’ the Master of great artifice, and O’ the Purchaser of the honor before whom all Thy creation is low and humble; Send the blessings on Muhammad and (holy) progeny of Muhammad. Help me against the oppressor and take my revenge from him.

Sheikh Kulaini (a.r) in his Book ‘Kafi’ mentions that the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said whoever recites the first four Verses of Suratul Baqara, The Holy Quran (Surah 2, The Cow, verses1, 2, 3, 4), Ayatul Kursi and two Verses after it (Surah 2, The Cow, verses 255,256, 257) and the last three Verses of Suratul Baqara (Surah 2, The Cow, verses 284,285,286), will not experience anything abominable in his body and property. The Devil will not come near him and he will not forget the Qur’an.

O Lord! Bless Muhammad and his descendants.
Give me security from a debt which causes my countenance to fade on account of which my wits are confounded, by reason of which my mind is perplexed and owing to uniform continuance of which my toil is prolonged. I seek Thy Protection, O Lord! against the sadness of debt and its care, the anxiety of debt is sleeplessness. Therefore, bless Muhammad and his descendants. Protect me from it. Of Thee do I seek deliverance from its disgrace in this life and penalty after death. Therefore, bless
Muhammad and his descendants. Deliver me from it with an excellent prosperity or sufficiency.
O Lord! bless Muhammad and his descendants.

Restrain me from extravagance and excess. Correct me with generosity and economy. Teach me the secret of accurate valuation of money. Graciously restrict me from dissipation. Let my sustenance flow from honest sources.

Direct my expenditure in matters of righteousness.
Keep off from me the wealth that would create in me conceit or lead me to stubbornly resist authority or render me oppressive.
O Lord! make me love the company of the poor. Help me in associating with them with abundant patience. Whatever Thou has denied me of the goods of this mortal world, be pleased to store them up for me in Thy everlasting stores.

Let what Thou hast conferred on me of its trash and hast bestowed upon me of its goods, be a means of helping me to reach Thy neighborhood, a step in Thy direction and a means of entrance to Thy Paradise.
Verily, Thou art the Possessor of Great Kindness and Thou are Generous and Bountiful.

There is a Joy in Forgiveness in which You cannot Find in Revenge

A man related to Imam Sajjad (as) came to him, and started cursing the Imam.
Imam Sajjad (as) did not answer the man. When the man left, Imam Sajjad (as) said to his companions, "you have heard what this man said to me; I would like you to come with me so that you can hear my reply to him."
The companions replied, "We will come with you, for we would like you to answer him back. We too would like to say something to him."
Imam Sajjad (as) put on his shoes and he read this verse as he began to leave, "...Those who lower and suppress their anger, yet forgive people, truly Allah loves them." (3:134)
Hearing that, the companions of Imam Sajjad (as) understood that the Imam will not answer the man back.
They walked towards the man’s house till they reached to his door. With a loud voice Imam (as) said, "Tell him Ali-ibn al-Hussain is here." The man came out offensively prepared to face the punishment of Imam Sajjad (as). But Imam Sajjad (as) told the man, "My Brother! A few moments ago you came to me, and you said whatever you wished.

If what you said about me is true within me, then I will ask Allah for forgiveness; and if what you said is not within me, then May Allah forgive you."

At that time the man kissed Imam Sajjad’s (as) forehead and said: "I said something about you that is not in you, yet I deserve whatever I said to you."

1.  Not having breakfast
It is a big mistake to ignore and not have breakfast. A healthy breakfast not only can provide sufficient energy to several body organs but it also contributes to choosing healthier materials for other daily meals.

2Eating before going to bed
Try to avoid eating before going to bed if you want to have nice dreams. Scientists revealed that eating spicy and fat full foods within one to three hours before sleep will lead to exhaustion and bored ness on the next day.

3.  Anorexia
Anorexia or overeating usually accounts for fat full meals resulting in overweight. Try to extend your daily meals to five or more instead of having only three.

4.  Staying hungry
When you stay hungry for a long time, your body becomes exhausted for not having enough supplies. This will lead you to eat overwhelmingly and your body changes the calorie to fat automatically.

5.  Fast eating
Try to eat slowly because a high speed eating ends in overweight. It takes the brain 20 minutes since the beginning of eating to send the message of fullness to the body. So, if you finish eating in 5 or 6 minutes, your body will not have enough time to send the message and thus this will lead you to eating more and more.

6.  Taking not enough water
Water is a vital liquid substance for the whole creatures including human beings. It is interesting to say that taking insufficient amount of water daily can lead to overweight since it reduces body’s metabolism.

7.  Not having enough fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables contain many substances that are crucial for the human body. Minerals and vitamins needed for human body can only be supplied by fresh fruits and vegetables. So you should try to take as much fruits and vegetables as possible in your daily meals.

8.  Doing other things while eating
This bad habit will lead to a mess around you while eating. You’re completely distracted and thus may overeat if you talk on the phone, watch TV or play a video game when you’re eating.

9.  Taking sweets, candies and confectionery instead of food
Taking sweets, candies and confectionery at hunger will lead to unhealthy nutritious habits. Chocolates, chips and candies have no nutritious value while they block your hunger and you cannot eat essential substances.
This operation could lead to new solutions for diabetes treatments because the procedure's "mini–invasive" nature significantly reduces post–operation complications‚ according to the surgical team at the university hospital in Pisa.

Using the robotic technique‚ surgeons can carry out the transplant with three small holes and a seven–centimeter incision. "This will put an end to the decades–old dilemma of whether it's possible to do pancreatic transplants because the operation is so invasive when done in the traditional way‚" said Ugo Boggi‚ who heads the team. The transplant was carried out Sept. 27‚ on a 43–year–old mother of two who had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 24. After the three–hour operation‚ the patient suffered no complications and left the hospital on Oct. 30. The machine used in the operation is the "Da Vinci SHDI robot‚" which has several arms and was designed in the multidisciplinary Robotic Surgery Centre in Pisa.
This damage can cause numbness and reduce feeling in your feet. As a result, your feet may not heal well if they are injured. If you get a blister, you may not notice, and it may get worse.
Check your feet every day. Inspect the top, sides, soles, heels, and between the toes. Look for:
• Dry and cracked skin
• Blisters or sores
• Bruises or cuts
• Redness, warmth, or tenderness
• Firm or hard spots
If you cannot see well, ask someone else to check your feet.
Call your doctor right way about any foot problems. Do not try to treat them yourself first. Even small sores or blisters can become big problems if infection develops or they do not heal.
Wash your feet every day with lukewarm water and mild soap. Strong soaps may damage the skin.
• Check the temperature of the water with your hands or elbow first.
• Gently dry your feet, especially between the toes.
• Use lotion, petroleum jelly, lanolin, or oil on dry skin. Do NOT put lotion between your toes.

Ask your health care provider to show you how to trim your toenails.
• Soak your feet in lukewarm water to soften the nail before trimming.
• Cut the nail straight across, because curved nails are more likely to become ingrown.
• Your foot doctor (podiatrist) can trim your nails if you are unable to.

Most people with diabetes should have corns or calluses treated by a foot doctor. If your doctor has given you permission to treat corns or calluses on your own:
• Gently use a pumice stone to remove corns and calluses after a shower or bath, when your skin is soft.
• Do NOT use medicated pads or try to shave or cut them away at home.
If you smoke, stop. Smoking decreases blood flow to your feet. Talk with your doctor or nurse if you need help quitting.
Do not use a heating pad or hot water bottle on your feet. Do not walk barefoot, especially on hot pavement or hot sandy beaches. Remove your shoes and socks during visits to your health care provider so that they can check your feet.

Shoes and Socks
Wear shoes at all times to protect your feet from injury. Before you put them on, always check the inside of your shoes for stones, nails, or rough areas that may hurt your feet.
Wear shoes that are comfortable and fit well when you buy them. Never buy shoes that are tight, hoping they will stretch as you wear them. You may not feel pressure from shoes that do not fit well. Blisters and sores can develop when your foot presses against your shoe.
Ask your doctor about special shoes that can give your feet more room. When you get new shoes, break them in slowly. Wear them 1 or 2 hours a day for the first 1 or 2 weeks.
Change your broken-in shoes after 5 hours during the day to change the pressure points on your feet. Do not wear flip-flop sandals or stockings with seams. Both can cause pressure points.
Wear clean, dry socks or non-binding panty hose every day. They will help protect your feet.
You may want special socks with extra padding. Socks that move moisture away from your feet will keep your feet drier. In cold weather, wear warm socks, and do not stay out in the cold for very long. Wear clean, dry socks to bed if your feet are cold.
Swimming Is A Good Exercise For Weight Loss: Best Workout

Weight Loss Tips come in many forms, but one excellent tip is to swim! My last post talked about dancing as a great form of exercise to lose weight. In order for a person to lose weight, engaging in a weight loss program is not enough. He must also exercise regularly. Most of the time, dieters take a stroll around the park or jog for 30 minutes to an hour. Running burns fat. But some dieters try out another sport – swimming.

Swimming as a way to lose weight is advisable for good swimmers. Good swimmers have already developed a rhythm in each stroke of their hands and therefore they burn fat in a graceful manner. This post I’ll talk about the many advantages in the fight against the flab that swimming has over other forms of exercise and provide some good ideas in the form of swimming tips for weight loss.

* Improve your swimming technique and formal strokes. It sounds obvious, but studies have shown that serious swimmers – whose movements in the water are smooth and natural–burn considerably more calories than unskilled swimmers who simply paddle around. The better you get at swimming, the more effectively it helps you lose weight.
* Alternate between more intensive swimming styles, like freestyle or butterfly, and more leisurely swimming styles, like breaststroke, backstroke or sidestroke. For instance, you could do 3 laps of freestyle and then 1 lap of breaststroke. This will increase and decrease your heart rate, helping you to burn calories more efficiently.
* Watch the clock while you swim. Gauge the time it takes you to complete a lap and work on improving it consistently. Like running and similar activities, increasing your speed will allow you to burn more calories.
* Start swimming slowly and build up your routine up over time. Begin with two or three swimming sessions a week – for about 60 minutes at a time – then build up to four or five sessions a week, then six or seven sessions. Similarly, work at swimming steadily for 30 seconds before taking a 30-second breather, then advance to swimming steadily for 45 seconds, then a minute. Efficient swimmers will complete a set of 20 to 30 laps without stopping.
* Watch your appetite. Many swimmers report feeling hungry after their workout – unlike cycling or running, which tends to reduce one’s appetite. Take care not to put those burned calories back on by eating a big meal after swimming.
* Keep at it. Consistency is the biggest factor involved in weight loss. If you enjoy swimming and find it easier to exercise that way than by running or biking, then you may lose more pounds overall than you would through another form of exercise.
* Use a partner or a swimming group to keep you motivated. Not only can they help you establish a routine and be consistent in your swimming, but trained swimmers can offer advice on improving your technique, and friendly competition can move you towards improving yourself much more quickly.

The key to losing weight is to have the determination to do so. As long as you continue with this healthier lifestyle which includes swimming every other day, you will shed off those unwanted pounds in no time.

One of the great wisdom hidden behind the recommended Islamic Veil (hijab) is related to same matter. Since Islam requires an ideal social environment where self-refinement and abstinence from sins could be made possible. Otherwise, controlling imperious-self shall become impossible, because, the corrupt environment naturally pushes human beings towards corruption, even thinking about sin invites a man to commit that sin ultimately.

The Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali (a) said:

"When eye sees an erotic scene the heart becomes blind from seeing its ultimate consequences."

-Gharar al-Hukm, p-315.

And said:

"Simply thinking about sinful carnal deeds encourages you to commit them eventually."

-Gharar al-Hukm, p-518.

Someone came to Ali, peace be upon him, claiming strongly his intention to repent. The Imam realized that he was not serious and asked him, "Do you know what repentance is? It is an act worthy of exalted being; it is a holy state of mind which makes you feel that God has bestowed His grace on you and that you are surrounded by angels. You lose your egoism and feel you are purified."

In repentance there is no need to go to a clergyman or to another human being. Repent to your God as it is said in the Quran,
Say, " Oh my people who have been prodigal against yourselves, do not despair of God's Mercy," surely God forgives sins altogether." (Quran 39:53)

The following sentence has been quoted in a Sacred Tradition,

The groan (of repentance) of sinners is dearer to Me than the glorified glorifications (of Me) so you should sigh and groan in these precious nights. Be your own judge and censor, confess all your sins and be sure that God will forgive you and purify your soul. Then you taste the sweetness of worship and sin and the pleasure obtained from them will seem to you so trifling that you will never feel inclined to commit them any more nor to lie or slander or accuse others.

Ali, peace be upon him, has considered six conditions necessary for repentance: Two form its basis, two are the requisites for its acceptance and two for its completion. These six points will be explained in my next discourse.

The greatest joy of chaste people has always been to admit to God their shortcomings, their faults, their needs and their poverty, saying that they show nothing but negligence, while God grants nothing but favor and grace. The following prayer is quoted from Imam Husain, peace be upon him,

My Master, when I glance at my sins I am overcome by fear but when I glance at Your Grace I am filled with hope.

Let me say a few words about the tragedy of Karbala. On the 9th of Muharram, the day before the martyrdom of Imam Husain, peace be upon him, the army of Umar Ibn Sa'd launched their assault on the orders of Ubidullah Ibn Ziad intending to give battle at night. Imam Husain, peace be upon him, asked through his brother, Abu'l Fadl al-Abbas for a respite of one night. To remove suspicion that he intended to delay the fight, he said,

Dear brother, God Himself knows that I love to offer my ritual prayers to Him and tonight which is the last night of my life, I am more eager to do so and to offer my repentance and beg His Forgiveness.

It was a wonderful night of joy for them, full of hopes of martyrdom. They made themselves neat and tidy and even cut their hair. They set aside one of the tents especially for this. One person would be inside and two men were standing outside when one of them began joking. The other one told him that it was no occasion for mirth and joy. He answered that as a rule he did not joke but he felt that night to be a night for mirth.

When others (the enemy) approached the tents, they heard sounds like the buzzing of bees and asked what it was. They were told that the Imam, his household and companions were busy praying and invoking God's Name. The Imam spent that night in devotion and worship. He saw to the affairs of his family and it was then that he delivered his last, eloquent sermon to his followers.

Let me mention a penitent of Karbala that night, a real penitent whose repentance was accepted: Hurr ibn Yazid Riyahi. He was a brave warrior of Kufa. When Ibn Ziad wanted to send a thousand men for the first time against Imam Husain, peace be upon him, Hurr was the man chosen. In doing so he oppressed and mistreated the Prophet's household. It is said that Hurr was seen to be trembling like a leaf. The same narrator was surprised and, approaching him, asked him the reason and whether he was afraid. Hurr told him,

No. I have no fear of fighting but I see myself at a cross roads between heaven and hell and I am wondering which route to take.

At last he chose the right route. Slowly, slowly he turned his horse away in such a way that no one knew what he intended to do. When he reached a certain point, he spurred his horse on until he reached the Imam's tent with his shield turned backward as a sign of coming in peace.

On seeing the Imam, he cried out, "Is my repentance acceptable?" The the Imam said, "Yes." His chivalry was such that he did not put one word of blame upon him for his past conduct. Hurr begged the Imam to let him go and fight.

The Imam said, "You are our guest. Get down off your horse and stay with us a while." But he felt shy, whispering to himself with shame for his past, for having sinned against the family of the Prophet. That is why he again requested that Imam Husain let him go and fight the attacking foes lest one of the children look at him and cause him to die of shame.

Allah says:

“…and despair not of Allah's mercy; surely none despairs of Allah's mercy except the unbelieving people.” Qur’an 12:87
Of course, sinful ones, who want to get the forgiveness and mercy of Allah, have to have hope and expectation. Hope is fostered by serious repentance, giving up disobedience, repairing the previous sins, paying back to people what is owed to them, offering missed obligations and reforming conduct, deeds and morals. Then hope and expectation become possible. For example, the correct hope of a farmer is to plough his fields in autumn to remove obstacles and dregs, and then he sows seeds in the spring, waters the crop in the summer and hopes that his seeds will grow, until, again in the autumn, a rich harvest is his reward.

If hope and expectation are not actively fostered, they will be just empty hope and unfruitful expectation, like a farmer who expects to get a yield without working his farm by plowing, seeding and watering. Such illusory and unfruitful hope is talked about in a very important tradition. Someone said to Abu Abdullah as-Sadiq (pbuh)*, “Some people commit sins and say ‘we expect (the mercy of Allah)”. Abu Abdullah (pbuh) said:

“These people sway with wishes. They just tell lies. They do not hope. He who hopes for something tries to get it, and he who fears something runs away from it.”[1]

According to this tradition, expecting the mercy of Allah must be accompanied with abstaining from sins, avoiding vices and doing good deeds so that one can be fit to get the forgiveness and mercy of Allah. In order to be safe from the torment of hell, you must first pluck out the causes for deserving torment that lie deep within you.
