“One who performs the Ziyarat of Imām Husain (a.s.) has connected with Allāh’s Messenger and with us. It is unlawful to slander him and it is unlawful for Hell to touch his flesh. Allāh will compensate him for every Dirham he spends with ten thousand cities, which will be written for him in a scroll. Allāh will look after all of his needs and everything that he leaves behind will be protected. He will not ask Allāh for anything without Him granting it either immediately or in future."

“The boundaries of the grave of Imām Husain (a.s.) are twenty ells by twenty ells and it is a garden from the gardens of Paradise. The ascent of the angels to the heavens begins from here. Every proximate angel and every Prophet, chosen as a messenger, asks Allāh for permission to perform the Ziyarat of Imām Husain (a.s.). There is always a crowd descending from heavens to perform the Ziyarat of Imām Husain (a.s.) and a crowd ascending back."

Imam Hussain (as) is the grandson of Holy Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). He was well known for his kindness, charity and love for the poor.

One day when Imam Hussain (as) was riding through the streets of Madina, he came across some beggars who had gathered together to eat the food that they had begged for during the day. The beggars saw Imam Hussain (as) and invited him to join them.

Imam Hussain (as) was not allowed to take anything given in charity (Sadaqah) as he was from the family of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw). Sadaqah is forbidden (Haraam) for all members of the family (Ahlul Bayt) of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw). Imam Hussain (as) got off his horse and sat down with the beggars.

Imam Hussain (as) then explained to them that although he would love to eat with them, he could not because as a member of the family of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) he could not take Sadaqah. As an alternative he invited all of the beggars to his house for food so that they could all eat together.

Moral of the Story: You should always be kind to others, especially the poor. You should not compromise your beliefs for anyone, but at the same time you should be polite in how you tell them.

"May Alláh make our reward and your reward great, for our grief for Husayn, peace be on him."
"May He place us and you from those who help his cause with His representative, the guided Imám from the family of Muhammad, peace be on them."

Imām Alī ibn Mūsā al-Rezā (A.S.) said:

"Muharram is a month in which bloodshed was considered unlawful by the pre-Islāmic pagan Arabs, but our blood was shed in this month. Our sanctity was violated and our children & women-folk were made captives. Our tents were set ablaze and whatever was found therein was looted. And they did not even honor the relation, which we share with the Prophet of Allāh (S). The day on which Imām Husayn (a.s.) was martyred has injured our eyes and our tears are constantly flowing since then. Our dear ones were dishonored on the plains of grief and trials (Karbo bāla) making way for sorrows and sufferings until Qiyāmah. Thus, sorrowful people should mourn over it (the martyrdom of Imām Husayn), for weeping upon it nullifies the major sins."

Imam Hussain (as) fought with Yazid ibn Muawiya in 61 AH to save Islam. Yazid needed Imam Husain's Bayat (oath of allegiance) to legitimized his rule as Imam Hussain (as) was the rightful successor. Imam Hussain (as) refused to give his allegiance as he knew that Yazid was not only corrupt and oppresive but also an enemy of Islam, who wanted to destroy Islam and take revenge of his uncles and family members who had fought with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and died in the early battles.

When Imam Hussain (as) was told that he had to give Bayat to Yazid otherwise he would be killed, Imam Hussain (as) replied that: a man like him could not give Bayat to a man like Yazid ibn Muawiya.

By saying this Imam Hussain (as) was trying to tell everyone that what Yazid believed in was totally opposite to what Imam Hussain (as) believed in. Yazid was the follower of Shaitan while Imam Hussain (as) was the follower of Allah (SWT).

Imam Hussain (as) knew that himself, his friends and family were to die in Karbala. He also knew that this was the only way that he could show to the other Muslims that Yazid was an enemy of Islam and was in fact destroying it.

Imam Hussain (as) wanted people, when they heard about the events of Karbala to know that it was not for power but for Islam and this is how to get into the army of Imam Hussain (as) you needed to be a believer and not a soldier. Imam Hussain's (as) army had all kinds of people:

Imam Hussain (as) had rich, noble men. He had freed slaves. He had old and young men. He had men who had done wrong and repented (e.g. Hazrat Hurr - the commander of Yazid ibn Muawiya army). He had pious men.

Whenever other Muslims heard about the events of Karbala, they would ask themselves, why it was that men from different backgrounds, different circumstances, different ways of life, all came together to fight and die with Imam Hussain (as).

Every Muslim regardless of his colour, his race, his background, his financial situation, his age, could identify himself with one martyr in the army of Imam Hussain (as) and through him understand why Imam Hussain (as) did what he did.

It is now time to address the more meaningful question – in the realm of Islam which sect considers Yazid’s Caliphate legitimate? As far as the Shias are concerned, they do not accord any worth to Yazid and his Caliphate; let alone Yazid, others far senior to him are not considered worthy of the caliphate that they assumed for themselves. Right from the first link in the chain of caliphate, the Shias have voiced their dissent making it abundantly evident that they have nothing to do with the Caliphs and their actions.
This fact has been adequately highlighted by the esteemed Ahle Sunnah historian – Hafiz Jalaluddin Suyuti in Tarikh al-Khulafa. At the beginning, he states clearly the reasons for compiling the book:
‘In this historical work I have recorded the biographies of those Caliphs who were known as Ameerul Momineen (Commander of the believers) and who were the Caliphs over the Muslims right from the era of Abu Bakr Siddiq (upto now).’
It is apparent from Hafiz Jalaaluddin’s comments that he considered the Caliphate of these individuals as legitimate and the title of Ameeerul Momineen (which they had sought for themselves although it was exclusively for Hazrat Ali (a.s.)) appropriate for them. Surprisingly, in his work, he does not list down the Egyptian Caliphs of Bani Fatimah (Fatimids), because he considers their Caliphate illegitimate:
‘Because their Caliphate was not legitimate for the following reasons.’
He enumerates the main reasons
behind omitting their names from the list of legitimate Caliphs:
a)They were not Quraishi
b)Many among them were inclined towards apostates, oppressors and atheists i.e. they were not Muslims.
c)Some of them considered alcohol as permissible.
d)Even if they were sinless, they commanded the people to abuse the companions.
When such persons assume the mantle of Caliphate, paying allegiance to them cannot be considered correct and their leadership is without any basis.
By exposing his reasons and criteria for rejecting the Caliphs of Bani Fatimid, Hafiz Jalaaluddin Suyuti has opened the proverbial Pandora’s Box. His criteria must now stand scrutiny while enumerating the Caliphs of Bani Umayyah and Bani Abbas. Were these Caliphs not guilty of perpetrating some of the crimes that Hafiz Jalaaluddin Suyuti has listed above?
a)Did their rule not mark the advent of apostasy, oppression and atheism, thanks to their implicit and often explicit support?
b)Were alcohol, and even worse homosexuality, not a part of their lifestyles?
c)Didn’t they consider maligning the companions and even killing them (as in the incident of Harra) as perfectly legitimate?
Nonetheless, it is evident from Hafiz Jalaaluddin Suyuti’s rationale that all the Caliphs enumerated in his book are legitimate in the eyes of the Ahle Sunnah as it corresponds with their teachings and beliefs.
In addition to this, on the 9th page of his book, he records the famous prophetic saying:
‘This religion shall subsist till there exist 12 Caliphs.’
In his exegesis of this tradition, he asserts
‘The Muslims coincided in their view on Abu Bakr (i.e. there was a consensus), then Umar, then Usman, then Ali (a.s.). They then reached a consensus on Muawiya but only after the treaty with Hasan (a.s.), then they agreed upon his son – Yazid…’
As recorded in Sahih-e-Bukhaari, Ibn Hajar-e-Asqaalani has also advanced a similar exegesis of the Holy Prophet’s (s.a.w.a.) tradition. It is apparent from the support that Yazid’s caliphate has received from all quarters in the Ahle Sunnah, that he was a legitimate caliph who had the consensus of the Muslims of his period.
This very Yazid was responsible for killing the beloved grandson of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) – Imam Husain (a.s.) – because he failed to submit to the ‘legitimate’ caliph of his time – Yazid. In other words, those who set out against Imam Husain (a.s.) and killed him and deemed this act to be legitimate are the same people who believed that Yazid was the rightful caliph of the Muslims since he met all the criteria of their religion. It is clear that the teachings of their religion not only raised Yazid to the position of Caliphate, but also brought about Imam Husain’s (a.s.) murder, both of which in their eyes are valid. As we have already reiterated, the Shias have nothing to do with both these events (Yazid’s caliphate and Imam Husain’s (a.s.) killing) and deem both acts to be heinous crimes.
Aale Ziyad, we have enumerated his lineage. Ziyad was the son of a loose and immoral woman, Somayya. Abdullah Ibne Ziyad was also illegitimate like his father. Ziyad is the one who killed the followers of Ameerul Momeneen (a.s.). He blinded some of them by piercing hot iron rods in their eyes. The limbs of Shias were amputated. Ziyad ordered the abusing of Ameerul Momeneen (a.s.) from the pulpit of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.). He killed several Shias in prison. When he was the governor of Basra , he made the lives of the Shias very miserable. After Ziyad, Abdullah became the governor of Basra . He followed in the footsteps of his father. When he came to Kufa as Yazid’s governor, he perpetrated the tragedy of Karbala . Such a battle between truth and evil will never be found in history till the Day of Judgment. It was a brutal battle in which falsehood was demolished and disgraced.

Imām Ja'far ibn Muhammad  al-Sādiq (A.S.) said:

"Recite Sura al Fajr in your obligatory (wājib) and supererogatory (Nāfilah) morning Prayers, for it is particularly related to Imām Husayn (a.s.). Have you not heard the words of Allāh the Exalted in this Verse (Ayāh):

O Tranquilled Soul at (complete) rest! Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with Him), (and) His being well-pleased with you.” (Surah al-Fajr, 89:27-30).

Here Imām Husayn (a.s.) is referred to as the”Tranquilled Soul, well-pleased (with Allāh) and His being well-pleased with him.”

His companions from the family of the Prophet, are those who will be pleased with Allāh on the day of Qiyāmah and Allāh too will be pleased with them. Verily this Sura is particularly connected to Imām Husayn, his followers (Shi'āh), and the followers (Shi'āh) of the Progeny of Prophet Muhammad (S). The one who continuously recites this Sura will remain with Imām Husayn (a.s.) in Paradise in his elevated station, and verily Allāh is Predominant and All-Wise."
